On Process

There is something wonderful about the process of a thing. I’m currently knitting Saltwater in more Sundara Yarn, Fingering Merino Cashmere, it’s deep purple. This pattern is quite easy technically, just knits and purls. But it’s a counting pattern. You can’t just knit obliviously, you’ve got to keep track to make sure you get the welts the right width. My Ravelry friend, Louise, taught me a method for tracking my knitting using a Moleskine and grids. It is satisfying to Continue Reading ››

Gaining Skills

{{unknown}}The thing about a craft is that you have to learn. You could just keep doing that same bit you do, the one you know. Or you can expand your skill set and your knowledge. For years all I knew how to do was knit long rectangles. I made horrible scarves. Absolutely terrible things out of horrible yarn. It was fun, but I realized at some point that I had no real skills as a knitter. I FINALLY learned that Continue Reading ››

Golden Finishing – Winner!

I’ve reached the end of my first skein of 200 yards on my His Golden Lair shawl: Don’t look at the foot in this picture! When we last visited this project, it looked like this. I’m hoping to finish it this week. I’ve got so many more projects I want to do. There are sweaters, hats, shawls, Continue Reading ››

His Golden Lair of Butter Yellow

His Golden Lair is a lovely Hobbit inspired pattern by Kourtney Robinson. She offered it for free earlier in the year and I snapped it up. This is her description: I read the Hobbit as a child, and I clearly remember the cover illustration. Smaug (the dragon) was coiled about his gold and he had one eye slitted open. This shawl is inspired by that image – the cabled stitches form both stacks of coins and represent that narrowed eye. Continue Reading ››
